New York Real Estate Continuing Education Requirements: Hours, Topics and How to Renew

The Short Answer
New York real estate salespersons and brokers must complete 22.5 hours of state-approved continuing education every two years to renew. That includes required hours in fair housing, implicit bias, cultural competency, ethical business practices, recent legal matters and agency. Then you renew online through eAccessNY, ideally on a computer, not your phone.
Required Topics in Your 22.5 Hours
Part of your 22.5 hours must cover these required topics. The rest can come from approved elective courses.

Who Is Exempt From CE?
New York law exempts a small group of brokers from the CE requirement. To qualify, a broker must meet all of these conditions:
- Licensed as a broker and engaged full time in the real estate business
- Licensed before July 1, 2008
- Held the license for at least 15 consecutive years immediately before renewal
Attorneys admitted to the New York State Bar who hold a broker license are also exempt. Salespersons are never exempt. If you're not sure you qualify, confirm with the NYS Department of State before skipping CE.
When Do I Need to Renew?
Your New York license is valid for two years, and the expiration date is printed on your license. The Department of State sends a reminder email and postcard about three months before it expires. That's your cue to finish your CE and renew. Don't wait for the last week.

In our experience, most renewal problems and DOS audits start with a renewal done on a phone: a missed screen, a wrong answer or an incomplete submission.
