How Long Does It Take to Get a Real Estate License in New York?

Whether you're in NYC, Long Island or upstate, the steps are the same statewide. Here's a realistic timeline for each one, plus the simple trick that saves our students weeks.

The Short Answer

Most of the time goes into the 77-hour salesperson course, which our students typically finish in 2 to 6 weeks self-paced, or 6 weeks in our hybrid program. Add the school exam, the state exam and your license application. Schedule your state exam right away, even before you finish the course, and those steps can overlap instead of adding weeks.

Your NY Real Estate License Timeline

StepTypical Time
1. Complete the 77-hour course2–6 weeks self-paced, 6 weeks hybrid
2. Pass the school final examFastest when taken online
3. Pass the NYS state examBook it on day one so it overlaps the course
4. Find a sponsoring brokerStart while you study
5. Apply in eAccessNYVaries; watch eAccessNY for approval

Step 1: The 77-Hour Salesperson Course

This is the biggest part of the timeline, and how fast you finish depends on the format you choose:

Self-Paced: 2 to 6 Weeks

Study on your own schedule. Students who set aside regular time each day finish fastest.

Hybrid: 6 Weeks

Self-paced lessons plus a live instructor review on Monday evenings. Follow our schedule and you're done in 6 weeks.

Step 2: The School Final Exam

At the end of the course, you'll take the school's final exam. Most students take it online because it's the fastest way to get results. Proctored in-person locations are also available, but results take longer.

Step 3: The NYS State Exam (Book It Now)

Our #1 Tip: Schedule Your State Exam Right Away

The exam costs just $15 to schedule through eAccessNY. The state doesn't care what order you complete the requirements in, only that they're all done when you apply for your license. Some of our students even take the state exam before they finish the course. Booking early means the exam wait runs at the same time as your studying. What do you have to lose?

Your passing state exam result is valid for two years, so there's no rush to apply the moment you pass. See our guide to scheduling the state exam in eAccessNY.

Step 4: Find a Sponsoring Broker

A New York salesperson license must be associated with a sponsoring broker. Don't wait until you pass. Start interviewing brokers while you're taking the course. Our guide on how to find the right broker in New York can help.

Step 5: Apply for Your License

Once you've completed the course, passed both exams and lined up a sponsoring broker, apply for your license through eAccessNY. Processing time varies, so keep an eye on your eAccessNY account. That's where your license will show up first.

How to Get Licensed Faster

  • Book the state exam on day one so the wait overlaps your coursework
  • Set a daily study schedule, or choose the hybrid program and follow it
  • Take the school exam online for the fastest results
  • Use exam prep so you pass the state exam the first time
  • Interview brokers early so you're ready to apply as soon as you pass
